The Red Hill Book Club will meet on Sunday, September 22nd after church service to discuss Raoul Peck’s 2016 I Am Not Your Negro. The documentary is based on James Baldwin’s Remember This House in which Baldwin recollects civil rights leaders such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. Bekah Menning will host a screening of the film at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 20th. Please RSVP to Bekah: rimenning@gmail.com.
The idea for this group emerged from members of the congregation that participated in the Roots Deeper than Whiteness course, in autumn 2023, who found the intimate intellectual learning and discussion deeply fulfilling. Members of the book club will take turns convening the meetings and facilitating discussions. Discussion topics will vary from book to book but some basic prompts might be: How did this book impact you? What lingering questions did this book leave you with? How do the learnings in this book interact with your faith? While we hope that there will be some regular faces, we will announce the book each month to the wider church community and people will be welcome to join if that particular topic piques their interest.
